IFS for many outcomes in Google Sheets
Nested IFs get hard to read fast. IFS takes pairs of conditions and results and returns the result of the first condition that is true: =IFS(B2>=90, "A", B2>=80, "B", B2>=70, "C", TRUE, "F").
Order matters: put the strictest condition first. The final TRUE acts as a catch-all "otherwise"; without it, values that match nothing return #N/A.
Syntax
=IFS(cond1, result1, [cond2, result2, …])
Example
=IFS(B2>=90,"A", B2>=80,"B", B2>=70,"C", TRUE,"F")
Turns a score into a letter grade.
Common mistakes
- Putting a broad condition first, so later ones never match.
- Leaving out the TRUE catch-all and getting #N/A.
- Mismatched pairs (a condition without a result).
