SUMIF in Google Sheets
SUMIF adds values only where a condition is met. It takes three parts: the range to test, the condition, and the range to add up: =SUMIF(A2:A50, "North", C2:C50) totals column C only for rows where column A says North.
The condition works like COUNTIF: exact text, comparisons in quotes such as ">=100", references joined with &, and wildcards. If the test range and sum range are the same, you can drop the third argument: =SUMIF(C2:C50, ">100").
Syntax
=SUMIF(range, criterion, [sum_range])
Example
=SUMIF(A2:A50, F2, C2:C50)
Total sales for the region typed in F2.
Common mistakes
- Ranges of different sizes (A2:A50 vs C2:C40).
- Swapping the test range and the sum range.
- Forgetting $ signs before filling the formula down a summary table.
