ROUND in Google Sheets
ROUND rounds a number to a set number of decimal places: =ROUND(A2, 2) gives two decimals, =ROUND(A2, 0) a whole number, and a negative count rounds to tens or hundreds: =ROUND(A2, -2).
Rounding is different from formatting. The decimal buttons in the toolbar only change how a number looks; the full value is still used in later calculations. ROUND changes the value itself, which matters for invoices and money. Use ROUNDUP or ROUNDDOWN to always round in one direction.
Syntax
=ROUND(value, [places])
Example
=ROUND(B2*C2, 2)
A price calculation rounded to whole cents.
Common mistakes
- Relying on display formatting and getting totals that are a cent off.
- Forgetting the second argument, which rounds to a whole number.
- Rounding too early in a chain of calculations.
